BerCO asked:
Recently a friend of our family lost a son in Iraq. He was a marine and only 19 years old. We know they have been overwhelmed with food, visits and offers of help. We would like to donate to a military charity in his honor but we don’t know of a good reputable one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the marine had a wife and kids, find out their names, and give them the money

The Semper Fi Fund is one that is endorsed by a lot of Marines I know.
I wish I could convey to them how sorry I am for their loss.

You can check with the Chaplains office at a military base near you to see if there are other needy families who could use some help with the items. OR you can donate the food to the local food bank. They are always needing food.

I know one that you should not donate to. The Navy Marine Corp Relief Society. They do give grants sometimes that Sailors and Marines do not have to repay but, many times the money that people donate is given as loans that must be repaid. Many times I had young sailors who had family members die and could not afford international airfare. The NMCRS would loan them expenisve plane ticket fares and make them pay back.

First of all, I’m truly sorry for your loss. What a brave soul.
You may want to try to go to their website, or contact their local recruitment office. There is usually a Marine assigned to the family after such a loss to help with funeral arrangements, or coordinating the return of his personal effects. This Marine would be able to assist in recommending an organization that would benefit. Also remember the Marines do A LOT with Toys for Tots. This is one of their largest charitable organizations that is well respected. You may also find out if their son had a favorite hobby, (i.e. hockey, soccer, etc. etc.) and perhaps consider a donation to that league, or organization in his honor. I have a friend of the family who lost her nephew in Iraq – and they started a memorial fund at his local highschool. A friend of mine from college was also killed, and he had apsirations of joining the local police force. There was a memorial fund set up with the local police dept to benefit their local K-9 unit. But, if you choose to do something like this, check with your local accountant or CPA first; as there are tax laws etc involved. They suggested having a trust set up in his name, and then in turn give the money to the police dept once a year to ensure the money is used properly, as city and govt agencies are always looking to cut bugets, you want to be sure that the allocated money goes to where it should go – now where the administration feels it should go.
I hope this helps.
