Motor Yachts Add comments

i need a yacht with a motor , about 40 meters long, 3-5 years old, able to sail between continents, in a range of 3 million. Is that a realistic price?
Can anyone tell me about a reliable source?

    boats.com lists several such boats.
You don’t really need one that big, but it would of course be nice.
You will also need the assistance of a surveyor to help determine the actual value and seaworthiness of any boats you are seriously considering.
It sounds like you might also need to hire a captain and crew to sail her.
    And last; WOW !!

I concur with a previous respondant who said to graze through yachtworld.com. An excellent resource.

Your question leads me to assume you’ve never been in the boating community. If indeed you’ve got the means to get something that big, I’d start by getting to know some boat people and go boating with them. But If all you are looking for is a mobile apartment house then hook yourself up with a reputable broker who can both help steer your purchase and more importantly, set you up with a professional captain (and crew) to operate and maintain the vessel.

With a professional crew you may be able to use your down time for charters, which can also offset some of the costs of ownership.

Good Luck. Don’t take the first offer.

As others have said… go to to get an idea on what is available. 40 meters length is a rare boat. A majority of cruising boats sailing across the ocean are around 40 feet. The 80′ Kelly Archer that someone referred you to looks like an excellent boat since you’ve got the budget. Unless you have decades of experience you won’t be able to sail a boat larger than 50′, maybe 60′, without a professional skipper until you have several years experience. For any size boat you should still have several years experience to head offshore.

In a large boat like that with many systems and huge sails you probably need to budget 15-20% of the boats cost for annual maintenance, plus another chunk for professional crew.

If you’re looking for maximum safety and comfort, a boat in the 60′ to 80′ range would provide that and have space for professional crew and visitors. In a boat that size you could have a skipper, maybe a husband/wife team.

After getting an idea of what’s available on yachtworld get yourself a yacht broker that is good at finding yachts. Or hire yourself a skipper and have him help find a boat. With your budget you will get excellent service if you find a good broker.
